HPV Test Works Better Than Pap Smear

Two new studies show that the human papillomavirus (HPV) is better detected by using the HPV Test, developed by Qiagen, than the traditional Pap smear. HPV is the known cause of most types of cervical cancers. For more information, see the full article below.

Thank you for highlighting this HPV Test research. I am a 12-year cervical cancer survivor who did not have the benefit of an HPV test, which has been shown to be 94.6% accurate in diagnosing cervical cancer compared to the Pap test at 55.4% accuracy based on a Canadian Cervical Cancer Trial with over 10,000 women.

Following a hysterectomy I was found cancer-free and had the quarterly follow-up pap tests for the next year, however I was also told to continue having Pap tests annually as a precaution, which I have done.

Even though my Paps have been normal, when I learned about the HPV test, which came on the market in the US in 2000, I asked for it along with my Pap, which I recommend every woman do. My test was found negative. Yay!

Women over the age of 30 are most at risk for cervical cancer and don't realize that even if they haven't had sex in many years, they're still at risk as the HPV virus can remain dormant in the body for years and be activated under stress.

Get the HPV Test. It could save your life. There's a great website where you can get more information: http://theHPVtest.com.

The HPV test should be done along with EVERY pap smear.
